Volvo has unveiled updated XC60 and XC90 SUVs with hybrid powertrains offering up to 124 miles of electric range. The XC60 also gets more standard equipment.
As part of the update, Volvo equipped both SUVs with a new 41.2-kWh battery, nearly three times larger than the units in previous versions of the XC60 and XC90. As a result, the XC60's electric range has increased to 124 miles, while the XC90 can travel up to 117 miles on electric power. Previously, those figures were 49 and 38 miles, respectively.
Both Swedish SUVs come standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces up to 178 or 247 hp, depending on the version. The gas engine drives the front wheels, while the rear wheels are powered by a single electric motor producing up to 177 hp. The hybrid powertrain also includes a compact starter-generator producing an additional 71 hp.
Combined output reaches 356 or 461 hp in the Volvo XC60, while the XC90 produces 461 hp. Every version of the Swedish models comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The battery is integrated into the floor, so it does not take up any of the available passenger or cargo space. The XC60 and XC90 accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 and 5.1 seconds, respectively.
Volvo has also made several changes to the XC60's styling and equipment. The SUV now features updated matrix headlights that retain the T-shaped LED light signatures. The hood, front bumper, liftgate, and taillights have also been redesigned. At the same time, the Volvo XC60 retains its familiar exterior appearance.
The interior changes are also relatively minor. Volvo has slightly revised the layout of the dashboard and door panels. Both vehicles now feature genuine wood trim. The seats are upholstered in Nappa leather, while the front seats also get ventilation.
The Volvo XC60 is equipped with an 11.2-inch central touchscreen. The infotainment system in the Swedish SUVs supports Google's artificial intelligence, which can hold natural conversations and plan routes. As part of the update, the Volvo XC60 also gets new safety systems, including steering assistance to avoid obstacles and a warning about a cyclist approaching from behind when a door is opened.
The arrival of these hybrid SUVs is consistent with the Swedish brand's current development strategy. Volvo has abandoned a rapid transition to all-electric vehicles. Instead, the company is gradually moving customers toward electrified vehicles by adding more efficient hybrid powertrains.
