Volkswagen Just Did the Unthinkable: The New GTI Is Rear-Wheel Drive

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI will hit the market after the ID. Polo GTI, which is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2027. The new model accelerates to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds and can travel about 373 miles on a single charge, although its maximum charging rate is limited to 183 kW.

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID.3 GTI, a model that is difficult to call a direct successor to the gas-powered Golf GTI but is currently the closest the idea has come in electric form. It is the second new model from the brand to earn the right to wear the iconic GTI badge: Volkswagen previously announced that a "hot" version of the smaller ID. Polo will also be offered.

According to Volkswagen's plans, the ID. Polo GTI will be the first to reach dealerships, with its market launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, while the ID.3 GTI will enter production afterward. The arrival of two models at once suggests that the Germans have decided to take high-performance electric models more seriously, moving away from half-measures such as the somewhat muddled GTX designation previously used on certain ID.3 versions and, even more strangely, the ID. Buzz minivan.

What's Under the Hood (Or, More Accurately, Under the Floor)

Technically, the ID.3 GTI is quite impressive. Its electric motor produces 240 kW (326 hp) and 403 lb-ft of torque, while acceleration to 62 mph takes 5.6 seconds. The engineers couldn't resist taking a small jab at the brand's history: the new model surpasses the previous power record holder in the lineup, the Golf GTI Edition 50, by exactly one horsepower

The main technical feature is the drivetrain. For the first time in the history of the GTI badge, power is sent to the rear wheels rather than the front wheels. As Volkswagen engineers told Evo Magazine, the software is specifically calibrated to prevent rear-wheel spin when all of the available torque is delivered suddenly—even with traction control completely switched off.

At the same time, Volkswagen did not follow the approach used by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and 6 N or the aggressive Honda Super N, which simulate gear changes for added driving excitement. Instead, the ID.3 GTI gets only artificial engine sound in the cabin, creating a sporty atmosphere without simulating mechanical operation.

Exterior and Interior

The sporty version is easy to recognize from the outside: the car is available in Tornado Red, the traditional GTI color, and gets exclusive 20-inch wheels. But far more changes are hidden inside the cabin, where recognizable tartan upholstery and a large GTI button on the steering wheel reveal the model's character.

According to the manufacturer, despite its substantial power, the car can travel up to 373 miles on a single charge. However, its peak charging rate is limited to 183 kW, which is noticeably below the capabilities of Hyundai's fast-charging EVs, which are also designed for active track use.

A Half-Century of History

The GTI badge appeared on a Volkswagen more than 50 years ago, and nearly every model to wear it has earned recognition from both owners and the automotive press. Starting with the original 1975 Golf GTI and continuing through the recent Edition 50, they have all offered an engaging character, front-wheel-drive dynamics combined with comfort, build quality, practicality, and restrained but distinctive styling. Arguments over which generation was the best continue to this day, but overall, every version of the Golf GTI is generally considered among the greatest hot hatches in automotive history.

Bringing that spirit into the electric era was always going to be a difficult task—too much of what made earlier GTIs legendary is simply absent here.

According to Top Gear, the new ID.3 GTI weighs about two tons, roughly 1,100 pounds more than even the heaviest versions of the internal-combustion Golf. The decision to make it rear-wheel drive also fundamentally changes the car's behavior on the road compared with the familiar front-wheel-drive GTIs.

Combined with the lack of simulated gear changes and other features that make Hyundai and Honda's electric models more engaging to drive, the result could be the fastest and most powerful ID.3 in the model's history. But one question remains: can it really be considered a full electric successor to the Golf GTI, or will fans of the gas-powered versions find it difficult to give up their Mark 7 Golf GTIs for this new model?
