How the Freelander 8 crossover climbed to 19,692 feet without a body-on-frame chassis
The Freelander 8 crossover from the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture made headlines with a Guinness World Record at its Chinese launch on September 3, reaching 19,692.68 feet in the Tibet Autonomous Region (Xizang). Additional details about the August 22 climb, shared by the Freelander brand, offer a closer look at how the 2.98-ton unibody vehicle with a range-extender electric powertrain (EREV) handled thin air, steep loose terrain, and prolonged electric operation.
The run surpassed the previous hybrid benchmark of 19,619.59 feet, set by the BYD Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 in July 2024, by 73.09 feet.
The climb covered about 4,856 feet of trail with an elevation change of 656 feet across loose scree and unsecured shale. At 19,685 feet, atmospheric pressure drops to about 47.2 kPa, reducing the available partial pressure of oxygen to less than half the level at sea level.
Chery-JLR said the Freelander 8's 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder range extender maintained 80 percent of its rated generating power during the climb. Maintaining similar output in thin air requires the turbocharger to compensate for reduced ambient pressure with a higher compression ratio to supply enough intake air.
The Freelander 8 uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive EREV powertrain rated at 610 kW (818 hp): a 360-kW (483-hp) front motor and a 250-kW (335-hp) rear motor. The rear drive unit is supplemented by a two-speed reduction gearbox.
In first gear, the system adds a 1.5:1 torque multiplication ratio, generating the equivalent of up to 8,000 Nm of wheel torque. The lower gear effectively provides a low-range ratio for slow, steep climbs. At a given wheel-torque demand, it can reduce the required motor torque and current, potentially lowering electrical losses and thermal load during prolonged low-speed operation.
This is critical at high altitude because thin air also reduces the effectiveness of air-based heat dissipation. The two-speed drive provides another way to generate high wheel torque without relying solely on increased motor torque.
The record also contrasts with the previous record-setting vehicle. The Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 uses BYD's DMO platform with a body-on-frame ladder chassis, while the Freelander 8 is a unibody crossover. It measures 5,118 mm long with a 3,040-mm wheelbase and uses air suspension with continuously variable damping control (CDC).
Chery-JLR said the Freelander 8 completed the climb without structural chassis damage, but it did not publish post-climb inspection data or specify which tires were used. The record confirms the climb itself but does not establish the long-term durability of the production chassis under comparable conditions.
The crossover is built at the Chery-JLR assembly plant in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, and is offered at a limited launch price of 289,900 to 379,900 yuan (about $40,700 to $53,300), placing it in the broad price range of the Li Auto L8 and Huawei-backed Aito M8.
The powertrain uses a 60.33-kWh CATL Freevoy NMC battery on an 800-volt electrical architecture. The vehicle is also equipped with Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 driver assistance with a roof-mounted lidar and SAE Level 2 assistance.
The climb to 19,692.68 feet demonstrates how the Freelander 8's turbocharged range extender, dual-motor system, and two-speed rear drive handled thin air and steep terrain. How these engineering solutions perform in everyday driving will be a more relevant test for buyers in China's competitive 300,000-yuan crossover segment (about $42,000).
