The Hongqi brand, traditionally known in China as a manufacturer of representative cars, has released its first model in the minivan segment — the Hongqi HQ9. The car debuted in 2022, and it's clear at first glance: this model was designed with a premium level in mind.

Dimensions and appearance

HQ9 is a large minivan. Its wheelbase measures 3200 mm, which is 200 mm more than many models of this class. The total length is 5222 mm, the width is 2005 mm, and the height is 1893 mm. These dimensions ensure a spacious interior. The design of the front emphasizes a massive radiator grille with chrome elements.

Interior and comfort

The first thing that catches the eye inside is the high level of finish. Leather upholstery with suede inserts, lacquered panels, individual seat control consoles, seat heating, ventilation, and a separate climate zone — all these elements are part of the second-row equipment.

The second-row seats have backrest recline adjustments, a footrest, built-in table, and USB ports. The ceiling is equipped with makeup mirrors with lighting, and doors feature convenient cup holders and storage compartments for small items. Armrests include additional sockets and pockets. Considering the cabin height, people up to 185 cm tall don't need to bend while boarding.

Third-row seats

The third row in the HQ9 is not only full-fledged but also comfortable. It can be accessed by walking between the second-row seats — the width allows it. There is enough space for three adults, with extra comfort for two: it features armrests, cup holders, and adjustable seat backs. Air vents, lighting, and speakers are available.

The legroom and headroom are sufficient even when seated "behind oneself". This is rare for a third row in similar vehicles.

Acoustics and equipment

The HQ9 is equipped with a Dynaudio sound system with a power of up to 700 W. The user can adjust sound zones: front, center, and rear. Despite the power, the bass frequencies may seem insufficiently expressive. The panoramic roof and side windows visually enlarge the space and add light to the interior.

Suspension and road performance

The HQ9 handles bumps well — the suspension is energy-absorbing and soft. The car behaves comfortably on rural roads and highways. Sound insulation works effectively even in the basic configuration, while higher versions come with multi-layer windows and an active noise cancellation system.

Despite its size, the minivan is predictably handled. There is little body roll when cornering, given the vehicle's class. Visibility is good thanks to large windows and well-adjusted mirrors.

Dynamics and engine

Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 252 hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic. However, the vehicle's weight (over 2.3 tons) affects its dynamics: acceleration is smooth, especially when fully loaded. Overtaking actively will require time. Fuel consumption in real conditions was about 12 liters per 100 km, which is higher than the declared 8.8 liters.

Features of operation

The HQ9 is not a city minivan. It has a low ground clearance and a long front overhang, which requires caution when parking near curbs. All-wheel drive is not provided. Steering wheel heating is only available in the top Executive trim level, priced at around 9 million rubles. The minivan is designed for transporting passengers with a driver, not for independent use on poor roads.

Conclusion

The Hongqi HQ9 is a comfortable minivan with a high level of equipment and one of the most spacious interiors in its class. It is suitable for business trips and transfers over long distances. The high price is justified by the level of comfort, though moderate dynamics and the lack of all-wheel drive may not suit everyone.
