Mercedes Prepares a Budget-Friendly “G-Wagen”

The legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class has long been the brand’s only true off-roader — but its six-figure price tag keeps it out of reach for most buyers.

Mercedes-Benz is working on a more affordable version of its iconic G-Wagen, aimed at expanding the brand’s off-road lineup and reaching a broader audience. The new model, known internally as the “Little G,” is expected to debut around 2027.

Positioned as a smaller sibling to the G-Class, the Little G will give Mercedes a competitor in the compact off-road SUV segment, where models like the upcoming Land Rover Defender Sport are set to appear.

While the vehicle was initially envisioned as a fully electric SUV, slowing EV demand has forced Mercedes to pivot. The current plan calls for a hybrid powertrain: a combustion engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Despite being smaller and mechanically different from the full-size G-Class, the Little G will stay true to the off-road spirit. Expect all-wheel drive, generous ground clearance, short overhangs, and a compact wheelbase — all key ingredients for solid trail performance.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed, but the Little G will undercut the G-Class by a wide margin, making the Mercedes off-road lifestyle accessible to more buyers than ever before.
