The Ford F-150 is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025. Half a century ago, in 1975, the now-iconic pickup made its debut on the North American market.

Back then, the launch of the F-150 wasn’t treated as a major event. It was simply introduced as a middle-ground option between the existing F-100 and F-250 models. The truck quietly premiered at the Detroit Auto Show in 1975, with little fanfare or media buzz.

Initial reactions were lukewarm. Neither customers nor even Ford’s own executives seemed especially excited about the newcomer. But that changed quickly — and dramatically.

Today, the F-Series stands as the undisputed leader of the North American automotive market. For 48 consecutive years, it has remained the best-selling vehicle in the United States — a record no other model comes close to matching.

The Ford F-150 also holds the title of the world’s best-selling pickup truck. This isn’t just marketing hype — the claim is consistently backed by independent automotive rankings and industry reports. In the 2024 pickup truck ratings, the F-150 once again took the top spot, reaffirming its dominance and appeal among drivers around the globe.
