7 Hidden but Surprisingly Useful Features Every Car Has

Modern cars are packed with features most drivers never notice — from safety tricks to small conveniences that make life easier.

A little story first: a friend told me that his child in a car seat was reaching for the door handle, and he’s been worrying ever since. I told him, “Just activate the rear door locks — the doors can then only be opened from outside.” I showed him the switch on the door, and he looked at me and said, “I’ve been driving for 20 years and never knew this existed!” That’s how easy it is to miss useful car features.

The truth is, cars have a lot more functionality than most people realize. Many features aren’t mentioned in driving school, and some drivers only discover them years into owning their car. Here are seven handy tricks you might not know about:

1. Fuel Cap Indicator

Fuel filler caps aren’t always on the same side of the car. For new drivers or someone switching cars, it’s easy to fill up on the wrong side. Most dashboards have a small fuel-pump icon with an arrow indicating which side the fuel cap is on — a simple tip to avoid mistakes at the gas station.

2. Child Safety Locks

If you regularly drive with kids, it’s wise to engage the rear door child locks. Usually, a small lever on the edge of each rear door activates the lock, meaning the door can only be opened using the central locking system. Each door needs to be set individually.

3. Disabling the Central Lock

Sometimes you might want to temporarily disable the central locking system. This can often be done by pressing and holding the lock button for a few seconds. Repeat the process to reactivate the system. Keep in mind: some cars have this function differently or not at all — always check the manual.

4. Automatic Turn Signal Shutoff

Many drivers forget to cancel their turn signals, which can lead to dangerous situations. Modern cars often have a “courtesy blinker” mode: a light tap on the lever makes the turn signal flash three times and turn off automatically. It’s a simple safety feature to prevent accidents.

5. Adjustable Seatbelt Height

Few people realize that most seatbelts can be adjusted for height. A button on the seatbelt guide lets you move the belt up or down, improving comfort and safety, especially for drivers who are taller or shorter than average.

6. Glovebox Mini-Fridge

If your car has air conditioning, the glovebox can sometimes double as a mini-fridge. Simply remove the plug at the bottom of the compartment, and cold air from the AC evaporator starts to circulate inside. Perfect for keeping drinks or snacks cool on the road.

7. Anti-Glare Mirror Button

Many powered side mirrors have a small, mysterious button. Its purpose isn’t obvious, but it’s very useful, especially at night. Switching modes reduces glare from headlights of cars behind you, making nighttime driving safer and less tiring.

Even after years of driving, exploring these hidden features can make your car more comfortable, convenient, and safe.
