One high-mileage MINI is proving that modern cars can last far longer than many expect.

For the First Time: MINI Cooper D F56 Reaches 1 Million Kilometers Without a Major Engine Overhaul

It’s a remarkable story that challenges the common belief that modern vehicles are built with a predetermined lifespan. MINI Cooper D owner Peter Kirchhoff has driven his car to an astonishing 1 million kilometers, or roughly 621,400 miles.

Since 2014, Kirchhoff has been behind the wheel of a three-door MINI Cooper D F56 finished in Volcano Orange. Over the course of 12 years, the compact hatchback has accumulated seven figures on the odometer—a milestone rarely seen in cars of this size.

What makes the achievement even more impressive is that the diesel-powered MINI wasn't used exclusively for city driving. The car has traveled through at least 25 countries, all while averaging an outstanding 79.7 mpg. Even more remarkable, the original 1.5-liter three-cylinder B37 diesel engine remains under the hood. It has never required a major overhaul and has avoided any accident history.

Kirchhoff has carefully documented the car’s mileage from day one. To make the occasion even more special, he planned his route so the MINI would hit the 1-million-kilometer mark right outside the gates of the Oxford plant in the United Kingdom, where the car was originally built.

And he has no plans to stop. His next target is 1 million miles, equivalent to approximately 1.61 million kilometers.

He has also thought ahead. If the Cooper D eventually reaches the point where repairs no longer make sense, Kirchhoff already knows what will replace it: a new MINI Aceman JCW.

For now, though, the little hatchback continues to perform faithfully. Judging by its condition, it may still have several hundred thousand miles left to give.
