Updated Honda HR-V Could Gain Trail Sport Variant and Sporty Shift Simulation

Honda is preparing an update for the HR-V ahead of a full redesign. The refreshed compact SUV is expected to receive new technology designed to make its hybrid powertrain feel more engaging, along with a new Trail Sport variant aimed at buyers who want a more rugged look and added capability.

The HR-V first arrived in 1998 and has since gone through several generations as Honda's entry-level compact SUV. The current generation debuted for the 2023 model year in the U.S.

HR-V could get a new Trail Sport variant

One of the biggest changes planned for the updated HR-V is Honda's S+ Shift system. The technology simulates gear changes from an eight-speed automatic transmission even though the vehicle uses a hybrid powertrain.

S+ Shift combines three functions: Step Shift Control, Sports Adaptive Control and Active Sound Control. The system changes the way the vehicle responds while also using the tachometer and simulated engine sounds through the audio system.

Honda says the goal is to make the HR-V feel more like a sportier vehicle from behind the wheel, similar to the approach used in the revived Prelude coupe.

The new Trail Sport version is expected to build on the more rugged character of previous HR-V packages. Its exterior will feature a roof rack and darkened elements, including the grille and Honda badging. Orange accents will further distinguish the model from the standard HR-V.

Honda is also expected to expand the Trail Sport's interior equipment. Available features are expected to include heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate and blind-spot monitoring.

The updated HR-V is also expected to place greater emphasis on electrification and comfort. Honda plans to expand the available equipment while improving the overall driving experience.

The refresh will serve as an interim step before a much more substantial redesign. The next-generation HR-V is expected around 2028.

Honda is reportedly developing a new modular platform for the redesigned SUV, with greater flexibility intended to help reduce both manufacturing and operating costs.
