Toyota Was Shown a Motorcycle Built for the Moon—and It Looks Nothing Like a Lunar Rover

Everyone knows what lunar rovers look like. In most cases, they are four-wheeled buggies built to crawl across the Moon’s rough surface. Japanese company OVER Racing decided to take a different approach, unveiling the Luna Rider-1, a motorcycle designed around the idea of lunar travel.

The unusual concept was presented at Toyota Motor Corporation’s supplier center in Toyota City, Japan. The Luna Rider-1 is intended to explore the possibilities of traveling across the lunar surface while applying technologies OVER Racing has developed through its work on racing motorcycles and custom components.

The event brought together numerous local companies, giving them an opportunity to showcase their technologies to Toyota Motor Corporation and its subsidiaries in hopes of securing a partnership. OVER Racing used the occasion to present a project that goes well beyond the traditional applications of motorcycle technology.

The Luna Rider-1 was created around a concept by Hamada of local design studio RIDE DESIGN, while OVER Racing was responsible for the motorcycle’s production.

Titanium alloy was used for both the frame and handlebars. The material was chosen to combine low weight with the high structural rigidity needed for a vehicle that could potentially travel across the uneven terrain of the Moon.

The project also incorporates metalworking techniques OVER Racing uses to manufacture racing motorcycles and custom components. The company applied that accumulated expertise to an entirely different field, connecting its motorcycle engineering experience with the development of a vehicle intended for space exploration.

The Luna Rider-1 has actually been shown to the public before. The lunar motorcycle made its debut at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan, before appearing at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show in March 2026.

That makes the latest presentation the third public debut of sorts for the so-called “lunar motorcycle.” Whether the Luna Rider-1 will ever actually make it to the Moon is another question entirely.
