An unfamiliar yellow warning sign alerts drivers to narrow bridges where oncoming traffic can leave little room to maneuver.

A BIZARRE road sign is giving some drivers major confusion at a key intersection

Across America’s backroads, small bridges carry drivers over streams and other gaps. Many are too narrow for two vehicles to pass at the same time, making it essential to recognize the warning signs before reaching the crossing.

One of those signs is easy to overlook, especially for drivers unfamiliar with its design.

Drivers should be able to recognize a rarely used warning sign that’s found in front of small bridges

The narrow bridge warning typically appears as a yellow diamond with two lines representing the roadway. The lines narrow toward the center, signaling that the road ahead becomes narrower.

Some versions feature a dashed line between the roadway markings to show two separate lanes. Others display only the narrowing road symbol, without additional markings.

While some signs include a separate plaque reading “narrow bridge,” others rely on the symbol alone to alert drivers.

Why Drivers Need to Pay Attention

A narrow bridge can leave little room for passing traffic. As the road narrows, the shoulders may disappear entirely, leaving drivers with less space to maneuver.

When approaching the sign, motorists should reduce speed and prepare for the possibility of an oncoming vehicle entering the bridge. Depending on the available space, drivers may need to wait until the crossing is clear before proceeding.

Recognizing the warning early gives motorists more time to react instead of making a sudden adjustment at the bridge entrance.

Another Road Sign Drawing Attention

The narrow bridge warning comes amid criticism of other road signs whose unusual or distinctive designs have left some drivers distracted or confused.
