Smart Reveals #2 Concept as ForTwo Successor, Full Debut Set for April 22

The Smart #2 concept, expected to arrive around 2027, effectively opens the door to a spiritual successor to the iconic ForTwo—the tiny city car that could squeeze into parking spots most vehicles wouldn’t even attempt. Positioned below the #1 crossover in the lineup, the new model will be noticeably smaller and, in all likelihood, more affordable. First teaser materials dropped on April 20, 2026, with the full reveal just days away.

So far, Smart has only shared sketches and tight teaser shots, though heavily camouflaged prototypes were already spotted testing last year. The company plans to unveil the complete design during an event at the Beijing Auto Show.

Even from the limited preview, one thing is clear: the overall silhouette channels the spirit of the original 1998 ForTwo. At the same time, the proportions have been sharpened, with wider fender flares giving the car a more aggressive stance. Up front, the design follows Smart’s current styling language, featuring the now-familiar face seen on models like the #1, #3, and #5.

Design appears to be a major focus. Smart is teasing a two-tone finish combining matte white with warm gold accents. Details hint at inspiration from fashion accessories, including buckle-like elements and leather trim. This clearly isn’t meant to be a bare-bones urban EV like the Citroën Ami. That said, it’s still unclear how many of these upscale touches will make it into production.

Company CEO Tong Xiangbei has previously acknowledged the challenge of building a truly small electric vehicle on a modern platform. Packaging a battery, meeting safety standards, and maintaining everyday usability in such tight dimensions becomes a complex engineering puzzle. Still, the #2 isn’t just about numbers—it represents the kind of car many enthusiasts associate with the Smart brand.

The official debut is scheduled for April 22 in Beijing, where the concept will share the stage with the #6 EHD fastback sedan. That model is being developed exclusively for the Chinese market by a global Mercedes-Benz design team and is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the EQE.
