This Ford Transit Camper Was Built for Cat Owners, With a Custom Interior Designed for Life on the Road

Most pet-friendly camper vans are designed with dogs in mind, but this custom build takes a different approach. Created specifically for travelers who refuse to leave their feline companions behind, this 2024 Ford Transit conversion combines off-grid capability with thoughtful features that make life on the road comfortable for both humans and cats.

The van was built by Papago Vans, an Arizona-based conversion company known for producing premium adventure rigs. It starts with a 2024 Ford Transit Extended featuring the 148-inch wheelbase, providing plenty of room for a spacious interior without sacrificing drivability.

The conversion is based on Papago Vans' Olympus floor plan, one of the company's most popular layouts. While the overall design follows the familiar formula of a modern luxury camper, several custom touches make this particular build stand out.

The Transit is equipped for backcountry travel with an impressive list of upgrades. It rides on Black Rhino wheels wrapped in Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, giving it a rugged appearance and improved off-road capability.

Up front, a heavy-duty CAtuned bumper houses a Warn winch and recovery points, while the rear features a swing-out spare tire carrier.

A Flatline Van Co. ladder provides access to the roof, where a matching rack supports a forward-facing LED light bar, a flat-mounted Starlink antenna, and 400 watts of solar panels. Shore power hookups, exterior lighting, water connections, and side steps round out the exterior equipment list.

Inside, the cabin feels open and inviting thanks to the absence of a divider between the driver's area and the living space.

Papago Vans finished the interior with white shiplap walls, wood-look vinyl flooring, a tongue-and-groove ceiling, Green Onyx cabinetry, acacia butcher-block countertops, leather cabinet pulls, and black hardware accents that create a clean, upscale appearance.

Immediately behind the front seats sits an L-shaped lounge paired with a Lagun swivel table. While this seating arrangement is practical for dining or working, it also hides one of the van's most unique features.

Built into the bench is a dedicated compartment designed exclusively for the owner's cat.

A small arched opening allows easy access to a cozy sleeping area that also houses an automatic self-cleaning litter box. By using an electric litter system, the design helps minimize odors while keeping the litter area tucked neatly out of sight.

Above the seating area, overhead cabinets provide additional storage and conceal the van's main control panel, complete with a touchscreen display for monitoring electrical systems and switches for the water pump, water heater, shower drain, and freeze protection.

The passenger-side galley makes efficient use of the available space.

It includes a deep stainless-steel sink with a cutting-board cover, a flip-up countertop extension, a microwave, and an Isotherm Cruise 85 refrigerator with a compact freezer compartment.

Several drawers and cabinets provide storage for cookware and supplies, while a portable cooktop offers flexibility for meal preparation. A Maxxair roof vent helps remove cooking heat and odors.

Across from the kitchen is a fully enclosed wet bath equipped with a handheld shower and a Laveo dry-flush toilet.

Large textured wall panels give the space a more residential feel, while a Nautilus retractable self-cleaning shower door helps keep water contained during use.

At the back of the van is a full-width bed positioned across the vehicle. Overhead cabinets provide generous storage, while open shelves add extra space for personal belongings—and likely become favorite perches for any adventurous cat riding along.

Like many fixed-bed camper vans, the area underneath serves as a spacious garage for camping gear and houses much of the vehicle's utility equipment.

The Transit is designed to spend days away from hookups.

Its electrical system features an 800Ah SOK lithium battery bank paired with a 3,000-watt inverter/charger. Batteries can be recharged through rooftop solar panels, shore power, or a DC-to-DC charging system while driving.

The plumbing setup includes a 33-gallon freshwater tank, a heated gray-water tank with an electric dump system, an electric water heater, and an exterior shower connection, allowing the van to remain functional in a wide range of climates.

While most camper van conversions focus solely on their human occupants, this Papago Vans build proves there's room for thoughtful pet-friendly design without sacrificing comfort or capability. From its dedicated feline living space to its premium off-grid systems, this Transit conversion strikes an impressive balance between everyday livability and backcountry adventure.
