Direct Cars has turned the Daihatsu Hijet into a tiny Thunderbirds-inspired camper, with production limited to just six units.

New Thunderbird 2 Mini Camper Revealed: Just 6 Will Be Built

Japan’s growing micro-camper market is giving manufacturers new ways to stand out, including limited-edition models built around popular brands and fictional vehicles. Japanese company Direct Cars has taken that approach with an unusual motorhome based on the compact Daihatsu Hijet, drawing inspiration from the British science-fiction series Thunderbirds.

The special-edition camper celebrates the 60th anniversary of Thunderbirds, which first aired on September 30, 1965. Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the series became famous for its puppet-based animation and stories about International Rescue, a team that uses futuristic aircraft and advanced technology to save people in danger. One of the show's most recognizable vehicles, the heavy transport aircraft Thunderbird 2, serves as the inspiration for the camper's design.

Direct Cars started with the Daihatsu Hijet light truck and fitted it with a compact living module styled after the equipment used by International Rescue. The exterior features dark green paint, a yellow stripe, red wheels, Thunderbird and IR logos, and a large number 2.

The result resembles a miniature version of the iconic transport aircraft, reimagined as a road-legal camper for everyday travel.

The futuristic theme continues inside. Silver and gray surfaces dominate the cabin, while red cushions and indirect lighting give the interior the feel of a compact command center. Instead of the wood paneling and beige upholstery commonly found in traditional campers, Direct Cars has opted for a more industrial, science-fiction-inspired look.

Despite its unusual styling, the Thunderbird 2 camper is designed for practical use on the road. Equipment includes DC-powered air conditioning, a refrigerator, electrical outlets, and storage compartments. The sleeping area is located in an overhead compartment above the driver's cab.

The compact living space does come with limitations. Storage capacity and room to move around inside are restricted, making the camper best suited to no more than two occupants.

Direct Cars unveiled the special edition at the Yokohama Camping Car Show 2026 in late September. Buyers in Japan won't be able to simply walk into a dealership and order one. The company plans to build just six examples and allocate them to customers through a lottery.

Applications are being accepted from September 26, 2026, through February 28, 2027. Direct Cars has not yet announced the camper's price.

For fans of Thunderbirds, the limited production run makes this tiny motorhome an unusual collectible as well as a functional camper. However, with only six examples planned, getting one will be a matter of luck rather than a straightforward purchase.
