Scientists Develop the Blackest Automotive Paint Yet

A team of researchers led by Zhiwei Liu of Shanghai-based Nippon Paint Company has created an ultra-black automotive coating capable of absorbing 99.9% of visible light.

The material combines nanoscale carbon black pigment with microscopic carbon nanotubes. Together, the two components trap incoming light and scatter it throughout the coating instead of reflecting it. According to the research team, the visual effect resembles a "black hole," with the textured nanostructure making the painted surface appear almost completely devoid of reflections.

Researchers believe the technology could eventually reshape automotive design, arguing that conventional paint finishes may no longer satisfy future styling demands.

For comparison, BMW showcased an X6 concept finished in Vantablack VBx2 in 2019, a coating capable of absorbing 99.965% of light.

One of only 799 Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale supercars has received a unique factory specification through Ferrari's Tailor Made personalization program.

The standout feature is its exclusive four-layer Verde Volterra paint, which shifts between green and gold depending on lighting conditions and viewing angle.

Bright orange accents contrast with the exterior finish, while numerous exposed carbon-fiber components—including the rear wing—highlight the car's motorsport-inspired character.

Inside, the cabin features Alcantara upholstery, black suede trim, contrasting stitching, and additional carbon-fiber details.

Power comes from the standard twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 working alongside three electric motors for a combined output of 1,030 horsepower.

Ferrari Enzo Sells Online for Record $12.4 Million

A 2003 Ferrari Enzo has become the most expensive vehicle ever sold through an online auction after changing hands for $12.4 million during a duPont Registry Live sale.

The supercar is especially significant because it's the only one of the 400 Enzos produced in the factory-finished Rosso Dino color. Named after Enzo Ferrari's son, the historic shade had disappeared from Ferrari's official palette for roughly 70 years before being revived at the request of American collector Gerald Barnes.

Barnes originally purchased the Enzo in 2003 for $662,694, paying just $2,364 extra for the exclusive paint finish that would later make the car one of the most valuable examples ever built.

The rear-wheel-drive supercar has covered only 3,758 miles and is powered by a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 producing 660 horsepower, paired with Ferrari's six-speed electro-hydraulic sequential transmission.

Its value has climbed rapidly. The same Enzo sold at a Mecum auction in January 2026 for $11.11 million before setting this new online auction record.

Xiaomi YU7 GT Sets Nürburgring Autonomous Driving Record

The all-electric Xiaomi YU7 GT has become the first fully autonomous vehicle to set an officially recognized lap record at Germany's Nürburgring.

Operating entirely under computer control, the electric crossover completed the circuit in 10 minutes, 29.483 seconds.

The approximately 1,000-horsepower all-wheel-drive prototype was equipped with the optional Track Package, including a roll cage, racing seats, slick tires, and the removal of the rear seat. Xiaomi has not disclosed whether a safety driver remained inside the vehicle during the record attempt.

Earlier this year, a company test driver piloted the same model around the Nürburgring in 7 minutes, 34.931 seconds, making it the fastest production SUV to lap the circuit.

2027 Porsche Taycan Gets a Virtual Gearbox

Porsche has unveiled the 2027 Taycan, introducing a feature designed to make driving an electric sports car feel more engaging.

The biggest addition is the optional E-Shift system, which simulates an eight-speed transmission. Activated by a steering-wheel button, the system allows drivers to "shift gears" using paddle shifters.

The software recreates the sensation of traditional gear changes by adjusting power delivery, simulating drivetrain jolts, mimicking engine braking, and incorporating a virtual rev limiter. A digital tachometer and updated Electric Sport Sound system further enhance the experience.

The E-Shift feature will be available across the Taycan lineup. Porsche has also upgraded the infotainment system and introduced optional low rolling-resistance summer tires that can extend driving range by approximately 12 miles.
