2027 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Get Wider Seats and a Major Interior Redesign

The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are getting a noticeable interior overhaul for the 2027 model year, and the biggest change is happening where drivers and passengers spend most of their time: the seats.

General Motors didn't simply add new foam or make minor adjustments. The company went back to the basic seat design and reworked the structure for its full-size pickups.

Ben Kelly, GM's engineering manager for the full-size pickup program, explained the changes. According to Kelly, the update goes well beyond replacing the seat padding. The seats are now wider, and their contours will be offered in three different designs.

The overall width increases by about 1 inch, including both the seat cushion and the underlying seat frame. That may not sound like a dramatic change on paper, but GM says the important difference is where that extra space comes from.

Drivers and passengers will sit farther away from the metal seat structure rather than simply getting a thicker layer of foam between themselves and the frame.

And that could make a bigger difference than the number itself suggests.

The approach should change the feel of the cabin more noticeably than simply making the existing seats softer. Full-size pickups have traditionally been viewed primarily as work vehicles, but buyers increasingly use them as daily drivers and long-distance vehicles. GM's new seat design moves the Silverado and Sierra further toward that passenger-car level of comfort.

Three Seat Designs for Different Buyers

GM has developed three seat shapes for the new pickups: standard, luxury and sport.

The company has not released many details about the differences between them yet, but the three-way split is revealing.

The standard design will likely be used in more affordable configurations such as the Work Truck, or WT, while the sport seat is designed to provide more support and keep the driver in place on rougher terrain.

The luxury version, meanwhile, is expected to emphasize cushioning and a more upscale feel.

Rather than using one seat design across the entire lineup, GM is tailoring the seating experience to different buyers and driving situations.

That makes sense for today's full-size truck market. Silverado and Sierra buyers aren't necessarily using their trucks strictly for work anymore. Many spend their weekdays commuting, their weekends towing or hauling and plenty of time simply driving on the highway.

The Cabin Is Getting a Much Bigger Overhaul

The seat changes are only part of the story.

The redesigned seats will be installed in significantly updated cabins. Higher-trim versions will feature three screens across the dashboard.

The 2027 Silverado, for example, will offer a 16.3-inch center touchscreen, a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a separate 11.5-inch display for the front passenger.

The changes fit into GM's broader effort to give its full-size trucks a more modern interior. The days when a pickup cabin could be defined primarily by simple, durable materials are fading. Today's buyers increasingly expect their trucks to deliver the technology and comfort associated with more expensive passenger vehicles.

That makes the seats more important than they might initially appear.

The new design isn't just an isolated interior upgrade. It's part of a broader rethink of the Silverado and Sierra cabins. Larger displays, a revised dashboard layout and the new seat architecture are all intended to change how these trucks feel from behind the wheel.

New V8s Are Coming, Too

The interior isn't the only major change for 2027.

GM has also confirmed a new generation of small-block V8 engines for the Silverado and Sierra. The lineup will include the 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78, which will replace the current 5.3-liter L84 and 6.2-liter L87 V8s.

The 2.7-liter four-cylinder TurboMax has also been updated, while the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel will remain available.

GM has not yet revealed every detail about how the new powertrains will change the driving character of the trucks. Still, the engine changes make it clear that the 2027 Silverado and Sierra are receiving far more than a minor refresh.

Buyers will be getting new engines alongside a substantially redesigned cabin.

A Bigger Change Thana Typical Refresh

The full-size pickup segment has become increasingly competitive on comfort as well as capability. Buyers still expect their trucks to tow, haul and handle tough conditions, but they also want comfortable seats, sophisticated technology and an interior that feels appropriate for everyday driving.

That's where GM's changes could matter most.

The wider seats, three different seat designs, larger displays and revised cabin architecture all point in the same direction: making the Silverado and Sierra feel more refined without abandoning their truck-focused identity.

We'll have to wait until the redesigned trucks reach dealerships to find out how much difference the new seats make in real-world driving.

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are expected to arrive later this year. When they do, buyers will get more than new powertrains. They'll also get wider seats, multiple seating designs and a substantially more modern cabin.

For two of America's best-known full-size pickups, that's a much more meaningful update than a simple cosmetic refresh.
