Mexico Under Fire: General Motors Slows Production of Its Most Profitable Pickups

General Motors has stopped the production of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups at the Silao plant in Mexico for a few weeks. Operations were paused during the first two weeks of July and are planned to stop from August 4 to 17. The company explains this as «production optimization».

The Silverado and Sierra are GM's best-selling models in the US: in the first half of 2025, 278,599 and 166,409 units were sold, respectively, up 2% and 12% compared to the same period in 2024.

Such stoppages are possible for conveyor adjustments or maintenance, but several weeks of downtime is an atypical measure for assembling such key models. Production pauses occur amid trade restrictions and supply chain changes. Despite this, both models remain among the top SUVs of 2025 in terms of sales and profits for GM.
