“Air Wall”: Ford Patents a Ceiling-Mounted Airbag to Protect Rear Passengers
Ford has patented a new safety system featuring an airbag designed specifically for the second-row seats.
Ford has filed a patent for a new safety innovation — an airbag that protects rear-seat passengers in the event of a frontal collision.
According to the patent application published on October 7, 2025 (No. 12434658), the system involves a special airbag barrier that deploys downward from the vehicle’s ceiling, forming a protective “air wall” between the front and rear seats.
This unique design helps reduce the risk of injury for both rear passengers and those in the front row by preventing body-to-body contact during severe impacts. The new technology continues Ford’s series of safety-focused patents — the company previously registered a retractable bumper aimed at reducing injuries to pedestrians.
Ford representatives note that patent filings like this are part of the company’s broader intellectual property protection strategy and don’t necessarily indicate that the technology will enter production soon. Even so, the concept has been well received within the industry and could influence the design of 2026 model-year vehicles, should the innovation move forward into mass production.
