First introduced in 1994, the Pajero Mini was designed to capture the spirit of the larger Mitsubishi Pajero in a compact body.
Originally launched in 1994, the Mitsubishi Pajero Mini was conceived as a smaller interpretation of the iconic Pajero SUV. It quickly became popular in Japan thanks to its rugged construction, available four-wheel drive, and styling that closely resembled its full-size counterpart.
Japanese buyers appreciated the format, which made the vehicle practical for city driving while still capable off-road.
Production of the Pajero Mini ended in 2012 due to stricter safety regulations in Japan and Mitsubishi’s limited resources to modernize the model at the time. Now, 14 years later, discussions about reviving the nameplate have resurfaced.
Following the success of the Mitsubishi Delica Mini kei car, rumors suggest Mitsubishi executives are considering applying a similar concept to a compact SUV once again bearing the Pajero Mini name.
According to new reports out of Japan, the premiere of the redesigned compact SUV could take place as early as the end of this year. The new model is expected to ride on the Delica Mini’s platform.
As a kei-class vehicle, it would be limited to a maximum length of 134 inches (3,400 mm) and powered by an engine no larger than 660cc, in line with Japanese kei car regulations.
Unlike the original Pajero, the new model would not feature a body-on-frame design. Instead, it’s expected to use a unibody structure, effectively making it a small crossover with an all-wheel-drive system that relies on an electronically controlled rear coupling.
Like the Delica Mini, the revived Pajero Mini could offer specialized drive modes tailored for light off-road conditions.
Short overhangs, generous ground clearance, and a relatively short wheelbase of about 98 inches (2.5 meters) are expected to provide impressive approach and departure angles, giving the tiny SUV solid geometric off-road capability despite its compact footprint.
