The fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery has now been on the market for nine years. During that time, the family SUV has disappointed some fans with its controversial rounded styling, gone through several updates, and found itself overshadowed by the more refined second-generation Land Rover Defender. In 2025, the Discovery sub-brand (which also includes the Discovery Sport crossover) attracted 42,727 buyers, while the Defender lineup recorded 112,635 sales. Against that backdrop, JLR has decided to refresh the Discovery once again by revising the powertrain lineup, updating the equipment, and introducing a new Landmark Edition trim that many media outlets are already calling a farewell model.

For now, the update applies only to certain regional versions of the Discovery. The model is now offered in three trims: S, Landmark, and Tempest. As part of the update, the entry-level model loses the standard 2.0-liter Ingenium P300 turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. In North America, it is now available exclusively with the 3.0-liter Ingenium P360 turbocharged inline-six, producing 360 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system integrated into the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system. In Europe, the Discovery S is available with two versions of the 3.0-liter turbodiesel: the D250 and D350, producing 250 horsepower (420 lb-ft) and 350 horsepower (516 lb-ft), respectively. Both engines are also paired with a mild-hybrid system, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Buyers can now choose between two leather interior colors—Ebony and Light Oyster—and the standard equipment list includes a wireless smartphone charger, nine USB ports, and numerous storage compartments.

The new Landmark trim joins the fifth-generation Discovery lineup as a tribute to the farewell editions of previous-generation Discovery models that carried the same name. Depending on the market, it is powered by either the D250 diesel or the P360 gasoline engine. Equipment includes nine exterior paint colors, including the new Tasman Blue metallic finish, darkened badges, a black grille and air intakes, tinted 21-inch alloy wheels, and puddle lights with a custom projection. Inside, the cabin features mountain-themed graphics, gray aluminum door sill plates, a refrigerated center console compartment, a panoramic roof, and Tech Velour trim.

The flagship Tempest trim also receives several updates. It is available in three exterior colors protected by a matte paint protection film: Varesine Blue, Carpathian Grey, and the new Borasco Grey. These are paired with a contrasting roof, Petra Copper exterior accents, 22-inch wheels, and new leather interior options in Light Oyster and Caraway with contrasting stitching. Front seats with 20-way power adjustment and memory are now standard. The Tempest powertrain lineup remains unchanged: Europe gets the D350 turbodiesel, while North America continues with the P360 turbocharged gasoline engine.

Pricing for the updated 2027 Land Rover Discovery has already been announced. In Germany, the entry-level S starts at the equivalent of about $91,900, while pricing in the United States begins at $64,900. The Landmark trim starts at approximately $103,000 in Germany or $70,800 in the United States, depending on the market. The flagship Tempest is priced from roughly $133,200 in Germany or $84,300 in the United States.

The future of the Discovery's successor remains uncertain. Two years ago, reports suggested that Land Rover would transform the sixth-generation model into a family-oriented crossover minivan and unveil it as early as 2026. However, this latest update suggests that the current Discovery will most likely remain in production at least until it reaches its 10-year anniversary. Production of the fifth-generation SUV began in February 2017.
