Dongfeng Motor has announced a major technological milestone: its Mach 1.5T engine has become the first gasoline unit designed for hybrid applications to surpass 48% thermal efficiency. According to the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), the engine has been certified as an “Energy Efficiency Star,” confirming a thermal efficiency rating of 48.09%.

Thermal efficiency measures how effectively an engine converts fuel energy into usable power. The higher the number, the lower the fuel consumption and the better the overall performance. The new Mach 1.5T reaches its record-setting figure thanks to three core breakthroughs: a high-energy combustion system, a low-resistance intake setup, and an array of friction-reduction technologies. The engine uses a compression ratio above 15.5:1, 500-bar direct injection, a valvetrain with a seatless valve design, and an electrically actuated variable valve-timing system.

Dongfeng also incorporated more than ten friction-reduction solutions — from an electric oil pump to thermal-sprayed cylinder surfaces — cutting mechanical losses and improving overall efficiency. According to the company, the new-generation engine can deliver up to roughly 62 extra miles of driving range on a single tank compared to the previous version.

The automaker adds that the power unit is engineered to adapt quickly to changing conditions — from stop-and-go city traffic to steady highway cruising — automatically maintaining the most efficient operating mode.
