Hundreds of Thousands for the Car, But Paid Wallpapers Too: Audi Launches New Monetization Trend
Audi Themes: paid backgrounds for the RS5 and RS5 Avant starting at $12.99.
Audi is expanding its digital services for the RS5, offering more than 300 interface themes to choose from — for a price.
The new Audi RS5 now provides access to paid digital themes, starting at $12.99. Even premium car owners must pay for backgrounds and icons, following a growing trend of monetizing in-car digital features.
The system, called Audi Themes, allows RS5 and RS5 Avant owners to customize their multimedia interface with wallpapers and graphic elements. Despite the vehicles’ premium status, interface customization comes at an extra cost: prices start at $12.99 for a one-time purchase, excluding taxes and fees.

The news emerged after a video circulated on social media. Audi Themes are already active in the U.S., launched at the end of 2023 on select 2023–2024 models. The collection now exceeds 300 options, including recently added seasonal and holiday designs like the Halloween Edition. According to Audi, U.S. owners have downloaded more than 32,000 paid themes to date.
This move reflects a broader industry trend of monetizing features that were once included in the vehicle’s base price. Even premium cars are now seeing paid wallpapers, subscription-based options, downloadable content features, and software updates that create an ongoing revenue stream. The RS5 is Audi’s next step in this direction.
From a market perspective, Audi is following the lead of brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Tesla, which are testing paid features, software unlocks, and subscription services. However, the strategy has drawn criticism: some owners feel that premium vehicles lose a sense of exclusivity when buyers must pay for basic aesthetic options.
With Audi Themes expanding, it’s clear that digital monetization in the luxury car segment is no longer an experiment — it’s becoming a new business model.
