Next-Generation Mazda 2 Will Grow in Size and Get a 56-Mile Electric Range

The next-generation Mazda 2 is being prepared for a debut next year. The compact hatchback will grow larger and get new styling with elements from the Vision X-Compact concept, while its powertrain is expected to feature a mild-hybrid system and range-extender technology.

The Mazda 2 debuted in 2002 as the successor to the Demio. The car became Mazda's entry-level compact model and, in subsequent generations, was sold in different markets under the Mazda 2 and Demio names.

What the New Mazda 2 Will Look Like

Mazda previously confirmed plans to develop the next-generation Mazda 2, and digital creator Theottle has now presented his own vision of the future model. The rendering is not an official image of the car, but it uses styling elements from the Vision X-Compact concept.

The hatchback's front end will retain Mazda's traditional grille, but the design will move closer to the latest CX-5. Slim LED headlights will be paired with a larger air intake and lower bumpers. In profile, the car will feature smooth lines reminiscent of the current Mazda 3, while the rear design will take inspiration from the Vision X-Compact.

The dimensions are also expected to increase. This should create additional space inside the cabin. The interior could also change significantly. The concept's design elements are expected to serve as the basis, with the traditional infotainment system giving way to a simpler layout.

Instead of a center touchscreen, the driver could use a smartphone holder. A round digital instrument cluster will sit directly in front of the driver. This interior will look noticeably simpler than Mazda's current designs.

The biggest changes are expected under the hood. The next-generation Mazda 2 could get an economical engine specifically developed for compact cars, along with mild-hybrid technology.

A range-extender system is also expected to provide additional electric driving range. It will use an 830-cc rotary engine operating as a generator. The car will be driven by a 170-horsepower electric motor producing 260 Nm of torque.

The claimed electric-only range is 56 miles. Once that range is depleted, the rotary engine can generate electricity, extending the available driving range.

As a result, the new Mazda 2 is expected to retain the compact hatchback format while gaining a roomier cabin, redesigned interior, and a powertrain featuring several technologies aimed at improving efficiency.
