Volkswagen to Shut Down SEAT as the Brand Turns 80

Volkswagen will shut down the SEAT brand. The German automaker has made a final decision to close the Spanish brand. According to a document prepared for the company's supervisory board, the Spanish marque will be phased out no later than the end of 2029. In 2030, SEAT (Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo) will mark its 80th anniversary.

The main reason given for the brand's elimination is Volkswagen Group's effort to cut costs within its Core brand group, which includes Volkswagen, Skoda, and Cupra. Instead of SEAT, the focus will shift to its sister brand Cupra, which is being positioned as the future of the Spanish division.

Under the plan, Cupra will be developed as an independent brand with a target of 500,000 to 600,000 vehicles sold annually. SEAT's existing products, distribution, and manufacturing structures will be economically optimized and integrated into the Cupra brand.

Notably, the decision comes against the backdrop of record sales for Seat S.A. in 2025, when 586,300 Seat and Cupra vehicles were sold, up 5.1% from 2024.

However, the growth was driven primarily by Cupra's strong 33% increase in sales, while SEAT itself saw sales decline by 17%.
