The Most Reliable German Crossovers Revealed—for Drivers Who Value Tech, Performance, and Handling
Owner feedback has been analyzed to identify the most durable German crossovers on the market.
German crossovers have long appealed to buyers who prioritize advanced technology, strong performance, and sharp handling. However, that combination doesn’t always translate into long-term reliability.
Consumer Reports reviewed owner feedback across the entire lineup of German crossovers and identified the models that stand out for durability. Notably, four of the five vehicles on the list come from BMW.
All of the models included are from the 2025 model year. Taking the top spot is the BMW X3, praised for its proven B48 four-cylinder engine and the well-regarded B58 inline-six. Owners report that, despite its relatively compact footprint, the X3 offers a spacious interior and a generous list of standard and available features, along with solid long-term dependability.
Second place goes to the Audi Q7. Owners highlight its high build quality—especially compared with other three-row SUVs—and its well-tuned steering, which delivers a more engaging driving experience than many rivals in the segment.
Rounding out the top three is the BMW X5 in plug-in hybrid form. This electrified SUV pairs the reliable B58 engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 483 horsepower. According to owners, the setup delivers strong performance while allowing for impressively low fuel consumption when the electric side is used regularly.
The list of the five most reliable German SUVs from Consumer Reports is completed by the BMW X7 and the non-hybrid BMW X5. As a result, no Mercedes-Benz or Volkswagen models made the cut in this particular ranking.
