Toyota Engines: The Best - Time Tested

Toyota has earned a reputation as a company that produces very durable cars. Much of this is due to the quality of its engines.

Toyota Engines: The Best - Time Tested

Toyota has long been synonymous with longevity, largely thanks to its engines. Even after hundreds of thousands of kilometers, many of them continue to operate without major intervention. Which engines have earned the title of the most «unbreakable»? Let’s turn to the experience of owners and statistics.

1NZ-FE – the long-lived compact
This 1.5-liter engine was installed in the Prius, Yaris, and Echo. Thanks to its aluminum block and successful design, it handled high mileage very well, especially in taxis. Many units easily exceeded 300–400 thousand km without overhauls.

7M-GE – the predecessor of a legend
An inline «six» from the 80s, which was installed in the Supra and Cressida. Its reliable design laid the foundation for future engines, including the legendary 2JZ-GTE.

1MZ-FE – smooth and durable
The 3.0-liter V6 was famous for its quiet operation and longevity. With timely oil changes, it could easily surpass 500 thousand km, although it might sometimes fail due to sensors.

5VZ-FE – the robustness of SUVs
The 3.4-liter V6 from the 4Runner and Tacoma featured a reinforced cylinder block and belt drive. Even overheating and tough operations didn’t always put it out of action – mileage of 600–700 thousand km was not uncommon.

2UZ-FE – the invincible «heavyweight»

2UZ-FE

The 4.7-liter V8 from Land Cruiser and Tundra was famous for its cast-iron block and durability. It functioned smoothly under extreme conditions – from deserts to arctic cold.

2AR-FE – economical and reliable
The 2.5-liter «four» from the Camry, RAV4, and Highlander was equipped with a timing chain and VVT-i system. With proper care, these engines easily exceeded 400 thousand km.

1GR-FE – off-road «millionaire»
The 4.0-liter V6 from Tacoma and FJ Cruiser is known for its timing chain drive and torque reserve. Even under harsh conditions, it seldom required major repairs until 400–500 thousand km.

22R/22RE – the king of off-road

22R/22RE

The legendary 2.4-liter engine from the pickups of the 80s–90s. Its simple construction, cast-iron block, and timing chain made it almost «unbreakable» – many units are still operational today.

1UZ-FE – the «millionaire» from Lexus
The 4.0-liter V8 from the LS400 was designed for eternal use. Its aluminum block and forged components allowed it to cover 1,000,000 km without major overhauls.

2JZ-GTE – tuning icon
The 3.0-liter turbo «six» with a cast-iron block and forged pistons. Even at over 1000 hp, many units have remained operational for decades.
