Restored 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Sells for $550,000 at Auction

Mecum wrapped up its Harrisburg 2026 auction this weekend, with more than 40 vehicles crossing the block for six-figure prices. Only two topped the $500,000 mark, including this 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429.

Built for just the 1969 and 1970 model years, the Boss 429 has long ranked among the most valuable classic Mustangs. Clean, well-preserved examples rarely change hands for less than $300,000 today. This Wimbledon White fastback proved to be in another league, selling for $550,000, including the buyer's premium.

So what pushed this Boss 429 into the half-million-dollar range? A complete restoration finished in 2024 certainly played a major role. The car presents as if it had just left the dealership, with the same level of detail extending beneath the hood.

The Mustang also retains its numbers-matching drivetrain. That includes the original 429-cubic-inch V8 and the close-ratio four-speed Toploader manual transmission, which is still paired with its factory 9-inch 3.81 Traction-Lok rear axle.

While several NOS components were used during the restoration, the car remains remarkably original. It still wears its factory sheet metal, retains the original door data tag, and comes with the original space-saver spare tire and jack assembly. Factory paint inspection marks and chalk markings were carefully recreated as part of the restoration.

Its ownership history is extensively documented, and the sale included a large collection of original paperwork. Among the documents are the original build sheet, two dealer invoices, the Ford warranty card, owner's manuals, previous titles, and an Elite Marti Report.

Rarity also continues to drive demand. Ford built only 1,358 Boss 429 Mustangs during its two-year production run, with 859 assembled for the 1969 model year. Wimbledon White was one of just five factory colors available, and some experts estimate that only 271 cars were finished in that shade.

Another major factor is the engine itself. The Boss 429 was powered by Ford's legendary 429-cubic-inch V8, originally developed for NASCAR competition. Ford installed the engine in the Mustang to satisfy homologation requirements.

In street trim, the 429 Boss engine was factory rated at 375 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the 428 Cobra Jet V8 was rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft.

With a final price of $550,000, this Boss 429 ranks among the most expensive examples ever sold at auction. Even so, it remained well below the unrestored 1969 Boss 429 that brought $1.04 million in June 2026. Two additional 1969-1970 Boss 429 Mustangs each sold for $660,000 at Mecum Indy 2026.

The Boss 429 finished as the second-highest sale at Mecum Harrisburg 2026. The top-selling vehicle was a 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Stars & Steel Edition, which changed hands for $561,000.
