This Beautifully Restored 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 Heads to Auction With a Matching Camper Trailer

Long before the phrase "van life" became part of everyday conversation, travelers were already exploring the open road in Volkswagen buses. Decades before social media documented every adventure, the Volkswagen Type 2 had earned its place as one of the most recognizable road-trip vehicles ever built.

Introduced in 1950, the Volkswagen Type 2 quickly became more than just a practical people mover. Inspired by a concept sketched in 1947 by Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon, the model stood out with its flat nose, oversized VW badge, expansive windshield, and unmistakable box-shaped design.

Although it was originally designed as a simple utility vehicle, the Type 2 evolved into a cultural icon during the 1960s. Its roomy cabin and adaptable layout made it easy to personalize, helping establish its reputation as a symbol of freedom, travel, and the era's growing counterculture movement.

While many owners converted their buses into compact campers, others preferred towing small travel trailers. That setup provided a comfortable place to stay while allowing the bus to remain available for local exploring after the trailer was unhitched. One carefully restored example of that classic pairing is now headed to auction.

The offering includes a 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus along with a custom-built camper trailer designed to match it. Together, they create a period-inspired touring package capable of accommodating weekend getaways or longer road trips with vintage style.

Originally delivered as a first-generation 15-window Deluxe Bus, this Type 2 has been extensively restored and upgraded. Skylight windows and a sliding canvas sunroof installed by West Coast Classics give it the appearance of the highly sought-after Samba model.

The exterior wears the classic Mouse Grey and Pearl White two-tone finish, while the cabin features a matching gray-and-white TMI interior installed by Bustoration. Original passenger-side cargo doors remain in place, and an additional set of doors has been added on the driver's side to improve access.

Additional exterior upgrades include Pre-A Porsche wheel centers with custom chrome barrels, Safari windshield windows, 1961-style turn signals and taillights, and pressed-steel bumpers.

Inside, the bus seats up to nine passengers across three bench seats. One of its standout features is a rare pre-1955 double-flipper middle seat, which allows each backrest to fold independently for easier access to the rear cargo area. A roof rack with wooden slats provides extra storage for luggage.

The cabin also includes a mohair headliner, a 1961 full-width dashboard, and a wood-rim steering wheel with polished aluminum spokes. Modern equipment has been added as well, including a RetroSound audio system with four speakers, an amplifier, a subwoofer, and an in-dash clock.

Mechanical upgrades are equally extensive. Power comes from a 2,017cc flat-four engine built by Bustoration, producing 130 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a Rancho Performance transaxle featuring freeway flyer gearing and a super differential. Suspension and braking upgrades include a custom narrowed front beam, Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes, and Koni shocks at all four corners.

The matching camper trailer was custom-built by Kyle's Customs in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and finished in the same Mouse Grey and Pearl White paint scheme. Designed to complement the bus both visually and functionally, it sleeps up to four people using front bunk beds and a rear dinette that converts into a full-size bed.

Inside the trailer is a compact kitchenette equipped with a two-burner cooktop, sink, and refrigerator. Custom cabinetry maintains the vintage look while modern amenities include air conditioning, a flip-down flat-screen TV, a stereo DVD system with surround sound, and a touchscreen audio unit.

Outside, the camper is fitted with tilt-out windows, an awning, and receiver hitches on the rear and side for accessories such as a bike rack or outdoor table.

Collectors looking for a classic Volkswagen road-trip package will have their chance later this September when this restored 1962 Type 2 and matching camper trailer cross the block at Mecum.
