Polestar 4 SUV to Debut September 2 With a Rear Window
Swedish EV brand Polestar will unveil a more practical version of the Polestar 4 on September 2, complete with a conventional rear window.
Polestar, the Swedish automaker backed by China's Geely Group, is expanding the 2026 Polestar 4 lineup. This time, the update goes beyond revised trim levels with the introduction of an entirely new body style. The company has officially confirmed that the Polestar 4 SUV will make its debut on September 2. The announcement has already drawn attention because the original Polestar 4 became known for its unconventional design, which eliminated the traditional rear window.

Now the company is placing a greater emphasis on practicality. While the original Polestar 4 was positioned as a sleek electric crossover coupe with an unconventional rear-end design, the new version moves closer to the traditional layout of a family SUV. A teaser image released by Polestar shows the rear of the vehicle, where the new model almost resembles a large hatchback, although the automaker continues to classify it as an SUV.
What Changes—and Why This Version Is More Practical

The biggest difference is the redesigned rear section. Engineers have revised the roofline, updated the greenhouse, and given the rear end a more upright profile. Most importantly, the liftgate now includes a rear window. In other words, Polestar is bringing back one of the features many felt was missing from the original model. As a result, the Polestar 4 officially becomes a five-door vehicle, with significantly improved everyday usability.

The automaker also says the new version will offer more usable interior space and additional cargo capacity. The focus is not only on appearance but also on day-to-day practicality. At the same time, buyers shouldn't expect a complete styling overhaul. Most of the body panels and the overall design are expected to remain familiar.

Key changes include:
- A conventional liftgate with a rear window.
- A more upright rear-end design.
- Increased practicality and cargo space.
- The model's signature styling and sustainability-focused philosophy remain unchanged.
Powertrain, Debut, and Market Availability

According to preliminary information, the new model is expected to retain the coupe version's 118.1-inch wheelbase. Overall length is also likely to remain at 190.6 inches, as the teaser suggests the rear bumper has changed very little. Mechanically, the Polestar 4 SUV is expected to be nearly identical to the existing model.

The SUV will ride on a 400-volt electrical architecture. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive version is expected to deliver up to 392 miles of range on the WLTP cycle. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive model will produce up to 544 horsepower. Polestar also says the chassis has been retuned to strike a balance between ride comfort and sporty handling.
The Polestar 4 SUV will make its public debut on September 2 in the United Kingdom. Production will take place in Busan, South Korea. The electric SUV will be sold in most of the brand's global markets, but it will not be offered in the United States. As Polestar has already confirmed, the company plans to wind down its U.S. operations after the 2027 model year because of the Connected Vehicle Rule.
