Mercedes-AMG Is Developing a New Hybrid V8 With 720 Horsepower

AMG has a surprise in store for enthusiasts: eco-friendly performance might soon sound a lot louder.

Mercedes-AMG Is Developing a New Hybrid V8 With 720 Horsepower

Mercedes-AMG has officially confirmed the development of a next-generation V8 engine, internally codenamed M179. The new powerplant represents a return to the brand’s roots after the controversial shift of the C63 to a four-cylinder hybrid, a move that frustrated loyal fans and cost AMG some of its core customers. With the M179, AMG aims to merge the unmistakable sound and power of a traditional V8 with modern environmental standards.

According to early details, the engine will retain its 4.0-liter displacement and twin-turbo setup, but will adopt a flat-plane crankshaft and hybrid assistance. This combination is expected to deliver higher revs, lower emissions, and compliance with Euro 7 regulations. A patented exhaust system from Mercedes is designed to recreate the signature growl of a classic V8—preserving what enthusiasts value most: sound and emotion.

AMG chief Michael Schiebe says demand for such engines remains strong, particularly in the U.S. market. The first models slated to feature the M179 include the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63, as well as updated versions of the S 63, GT 63, and the iconic G 63. Output is expected to exceed 720 horsepower, placing it among the world’s top-performing sports cars.

For Mercedes, the move might seem paradoxical. The company continues to push electrification, yet acknowledges that its lineup wouldn’t be complete without a true V8. If new technology can preserve that legendary sound, the M179 won’t just be an engine—it could become a symbol of balance between the future and tradition.

And one more thought: this step shows the brand’s maturity. Mercedes is listening to its customers. For many fans, the answer to the question “Which car should I buy?” might once again be simple: the one with a real AMG V8 under the hood.
