How to Polish Your Car So It Looks Like It Just Rolled Out of the Showroom
A clean, well-maintained car is great—one with a properly polished finish is even better.
A clean, mechanically sound car is always a pleasure. But a freshly polished exterior—one that looks like it just left the dealer’s lot—takes things to another level. With the right approach, you can give your car that kind of shine at home, and other drivers will wonder how you pulled it off.
You don’t need to spend thousands on professional detailing to get a mirror-like finish. Good results come from proper care and the right technique, and you can achieve them in your own garage. Most cars don’t need polishing more than once every few months, and in between, you can use specialty products to keep the paint looking sharp.

Before you start, make sure you have the basics on hand: a flannel cloth, sandpaper, a foam applicator, a rubbing compound, and—of course—the polish itself. It’s not an extensive list, and everything is easy to source.
Hand polishing isn’t nearly as complicated as it might seem. Begin by washing the car thoroughly with water and soap—doing it twice is even better. Once clean, degrease the surface. After that, apply the polish and allow it to dry.
If the car has areas where the paint or clear coat is damaged, there’s an extra step. After degreasing, treat those spots with synthetic detailing clay. Once applied and spread over the affected area, sand and smooth it out before moving on to the standard polishing process.
