Mitsubishi Preps a New-Generation Montero: First Mysterious Image of the 2026 SUV Revealed

The comeback of the Mitsubishi Montero—once a major player in the U.S. SUV market—appears closer than ever. The Japanese automaker is clearly gearing up to unveil a new Montero, as suggested by a freshly released teaser video from Mitsubishi.

The 60-second clip opens with a look back at Mitsubishi’s motorsports heritage, highlighting the brand’s involvement with Ralliart in the World Rally Championship and the grueling Dakar Rally. The video then shifts to modern-day racing footage, showing the Mitsubishi Ralliart Triton competing in the 2025 Asia Cross Country Rally. The final moments are especially telling: archival footage of a race-prepped Montero charging through the desert fades into a shadowy silhouette of a new SUV cruising down a highway—Mitsubishi’s latest creation.

It doesn’t take much guesswork to see what’s coming. Mitsubishi is clearly preparing to reintroduce the long-awaited Montero.

The new Mitsubishi Montero: an official debut appears to be coming soon.

The company has already outlined plans to launch several new models by 2030 and, more than a year ago, quietly re-registered the “Montero” name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. More recently, American automotive journalists have spotted camouflaged test vehicles that closely resemble the SUV shown at the end of Mitsubishi’s teaser.

While Mitsubishi has yet to confirm an official debut date for the next-generation Montero, the timing of this teaser strongly suggests that the reveal is just around the corner.
