Subaru Announces New Flagship Three-Row Electric SUV

Japanese automaker Subaru has officially confirmed plans to expand its lineup of electric vehicles.

The most highly anticipated debut is a large three-row SUV set to arrive in 2026. Subaru of America Chief Operating Officer Jeff Walters said the move is part of the brand’s broader strategy to regain ground in the global race toward electrification.

By the end of this year, Subaru’s lineup is expected to include four fully electric models. In addition to the existing Solterra, two new EVs — the Trailseeker and the Uncharted — are scheduled to launch this spring. However, the upcoming three-row crossover is positioned to become the brand’s true flagship and its largest vehicle yet.

Preliminary information suggests the new model will share significant components with the upcoming 2027 Toyota Highlander EV. That comes as little surprise, given the long-standing partnership between Toyota and Subaru in developing vehicle platforms, including electric architectures.

While full technical specifications have not yet been released, industry experts expect the large SUV to feature a standard dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. That would align with Subaru’s brand identity, as most of its models are designed to deliver confident performance in a variety of road conditions.

Currently, the Ascent is Subaru’s only three-row SUV, and it has faced criticism for a cramped third row and an underwhelming powertrain. The new electric flagship is expected to address those shortcomings by offering more interior space and more modern performance.

In terms of pricing, the new EV will likely become the most expensive model in Subaru’s history. With competitors in the segment — such as the Hyundai Ioniq 9 — starting at around $55,000, Subaru’s flagship is expected to target a similar price range.
