BMW X5 L Debuts With a Longer Wheelbase Than the X7 and an 8K Rear Theater

Less than a month after revealing the all-new BMW X5, the automaker has introduced a long-wheelbase version for China alongside the all-electric iX5 L. Aside from their stretched proportions, both models closely resemble the standard X5 sold in North America and Europe.

The extra length comes from a revised chassis. Wheelbase has been extended by 5.1 inches, bringing the total to 124.6 inches. That's even longer than the globally available BMW X7, which rides on a 122.2-inch wheelbase. Buyers who spend more time in the rear seats than behind the wheel may find the stretched X5 especially appealing.

Beyond the longer wheelbase, one of the biggest updates involves the driver-assistance technology. The X5 L and iX5 L use software developed by Chinese technology company Momenta. Powered by AI trained specifically for local driving conditions, the system is designed to provide comprehensive point-to-point driver assistance.

The cabin also receives several upgrades over the standard X5. Both front and rear passengers get newly designed seats, while second-row occupants gain a fold-down entertainment display capable of 8K video streaming and online gaming.

Exterior changes are relatively subtle. The most noticeable updates include revised graphics around BMW's signature Hofmeister kink and unique wheel designs. Standard equipment on both the X5 L and iX5 L includes diagonal LED daytime running lights in place of the X-shaped signature used on the global model, although the X-shaped lighting remains available as an option.

BMW's China team also added additional light strips between the daytime running lights and the kidney grille, giving the front fascia a slimmer appearance.

BMW has not yet released powertrain specifications for either model. However, the company says the all-electric iX5 L is expected to deliver more than 620 miles of driving range under China's CLTC testing cycle.
