Volkswagen ID. Tiguan to Replace ID.4: New Details and Launch Timeline for the Electric SUV

Volkswagen is preparing a major update to its electric SUV lineup: instead of the familiar ID.4, an all-new ID. Tiguan is coming to market. This is more than a name change—it is a major redesign of the model, which is now based on the modern MEB+ platform. The move will help the brand keep pace with rapidly changing trends in the EV industry and maintain its position among competitors.

Production of the ID.4 at the Chattanooga plant ended late last year, and the company's projections called for inventory to last through 2027, but supplies ran out sooner.

The first spy photos show significant changes that distinguish it from its predecessor. The exterior looks more restrained and modern, while new doors and redesigned rear pillars with a different shape emphasize that this is more than a facelift.

The rear end is also changing, with a new bumper, diffuser, liftgate, and taillights that are currently being disguised to look like those of the old model with camouflage film.

The interior remains under wraps, but it is expected to feature a completely new dashboard, different displays, steering wheel, buttons, and trim. According to reports, Volkswagen is focusing on higher-quality materials and improved ergonomics.

The biggest difference with the ID. Tiguan is the switch to the MEB+ platform, which promises not only greater body rigidity but also expanded battery and charging capabilities. Battery packs of 58 and 79 kWh are expected, along with new electric motors offering more power and range, as well as charging at more than 180 kW. This will allow the ID. Tiguan to compete with modern electric SUVs on the market.

The previous ID.4 was built in the U.S. from 2022 through 2026 and is now produced in Germany and China. The model was offered with rear- or all-wheel drive, measured 4,584 mm long, 1,852 mm wide, and 1,636 mm tall, and weighed more than 2 tons. In the U.S., ID.4 pricing started at $45,095 for the base version, while top trims cost as much as $57,655.

The arrival of the ID. Tiguan is not the only update in the crossover segment: automakers are actively reevaluating their lineups to meet market expectations.
