“Mustang” for Off-Roading: Ford Reveals Baja Version of Its Iconic Sports Car
At a dealer conference in Las Vegas, Ford showed several Mustang concept versions. The biggest surprise was its off-road Mustang Baja, confirming that the company plans to turn the legendary name into an entire family of models.
According to Ford's plans, the Baja is intended to be a direct answer to projects such as the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato. However, don't expect a full-fledged body-on-frame off-roader. The Mustang Baja will remain a coupe, but with serious modifications.
A significant increase in ground clearance is expected—by 2 to 3 inches, according to some reports—along with long-travel suspension, reinforced underbody protection, and aggressive off-road tires. Rumor has it that the iconic coupe will get all-wheel drive, since conquering the sands of Mexico's Baja California would otherwise be difficult.
At the presentation, Ford also confirmed plans to launch a production version of the RTR Mustang, bring back the convertible Dark Horse SC with a 5.2-liter V8, and develop a pickup truck based on the Bronco SUV platform. The launch timelines for most of the new models remain secret, but the very fact that Ford displayed the concepts indicates that the projects are at an advanced stage.
