Modern vehicles have a wide array of buttons on the dashboard — and some of them remain untouched for years, with drivers not even knowing their true purpose. The automotive outlet Auto30 decided to investigate the mystery behind a curious control often nicknamed the “Jellyfish Launch” button.
Why do people call it the “Jellyfish Launch” button?
When a button has no obvious purpose, drivers tend to come up with funny names for it. The “Jellyfish Launch” nickname comes from a symbol that looks a bit like a jellyfish being fired diagonally out of the back of a pickup truck.
But the real function is far less exotic. Drum roll, please! The button simply turns on the truck’s rear bed light — an extra illumination feature for the cargo area.

This light is extremely handy when loading or unloading a truck at night or backing into a dark area.
In reality, the supposed “jellyfish” icon is nothing more than a light beam shining down toward the truck bed. It’s the same basic symbol used for headlights on the vehicle’s dashboard — just flipped and stylized for rear lighting.
