Astronaut Button: What This Mysterious Car Feature Actually Does

Some functions in a modern car make sense only after digging into the owner’s manual — and this little button is a perfect example.

Astronaut Button: What This Mysterious Car Feature Actually Does

Today’s cars are packed with all kinds of switches and icons, and not all of them are self-explanatory. One of the most puzzling is a button featuring a small figure that, at first glance, looks a bit like an astronaut. So what does it actually do?

A closer look makes the picture clearer: it’s not an astronaut at all. It’s a stylized person shown against the outline of a padlock — and more specifically, it represents a child. Once you notice that detail, its purpose becomes far easier to guess.

Astronaut Button: It’s a Child in a Padlock

This button activates the rear-door lock function. Pressing it locks both back doors from the inside, keeping them secured until the button is pressed again to disengage the feature. It’s a simple system, but extremely useful when you’re driving with young passengers.

Any parent transporting kids around eight to ten years old will appreciate the peace of mind this “astronaut button” provides. With the rear doors safely locked, the ride becomes noticeably less stressful for everyone.
