There Are Better Options: Experts Name 6 SUVs to Avoid

Many people love SUVs for their ability to cross rivers and tackle rough terrain. However, not all SUVs are created equal. While modern technology has significantly improved fuel efficiency, some models still fall short in other areas.

Consumer Reports reviewed several SUV models and identified six that drivers might want to skip, according to BY ZAK WOJNAR at Slashgear.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2025

Experts say this SUV falls short of expectations, with flaws that allow alternatives to outperform it. They also note it’s not very fuel-efficient.

A recommended alternative is the 2025 Honda Passport, praised for its smooth ride and strong value for the price.

Jeep Compass 2026

Specialists describe this SUV as feeling more like a bus, with stiff handling, jerky motions, and an engine that strains under acceleration.

“Add a cramped interior that may feel claustrophobic to some passengers, and you have a vehicle that can’t compete in its class. The Compass forces an unnatural seating position with bent knees and extended arms — not ideal for long trips unless you plan to stop for a massage along the way,” Slashgear notes.

Instead, experts suggest the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek, which offers a roomy cabin, smoother ride, lower starting price, and easier handling. It also features X-Mode, Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system that optimizes power distribution for maximum control. “Simply put, the Crosstrek exists — the Compass doesn’t really have a reason to,” they add.

Alfa Romeo Tonale 2026

Experts say this model isn’t much better than the 2025 version. The suspension is lacking, and the cabin has too many plastic surfaces that fail to convey luxury.

“The interior feels cheap, noisy, and bulky. Sure, 285 horsepower and all-wheel drive are good, and hybrid compatibility is a plus, but there’s nothing in the Tonale that lives up to the expectations of a luxury SUV,” they explain.

Consumer Reports recommends the 2026 BMW X1 as a better alternative, offering a cozier ride and more stylish interior. With all-wheel drive, a turbo four-cylinder engine, and a seven-speed automatic, the X1 provides smoother performance overall, even if the ride remains slightly firm.

Mazda CX-90 2025

Consumer Reports found the CX-90’s reliability low, with the plug-in hybrid version scoring even worse. While the model has potential, it hasn’t quite delivered.

Experts suggest the 2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid as a competitor: roomy inside, commanding outside, but not overwhelmingly large. It balances comfort and practicality, making it a reliable SUV choice.

GMC Terrain 2026

Experts say this SUV isn’t well-suited for off-road or steep terrain.

“If you only drive in suburban neighborhoods, the Terrain works, but most drivers will want something more versatile,” Slashgear notes.

They recommend the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid, featuring a hybrid drivetrain and a 194-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

Land Rover Defender 2026

Fans of Land Rover’s boxy style will appreciate the spacious cabin, but experts argue the 2026 Defender feels outdated.

“It can seat up to eight passengers, which is great for large families or transporting a full school band’s worth of instruments. But while the 2025 Defender would have been excellent 20 years ago, today it falls short compared to alternatives like the 2026 BMW X5,” the review concludes.
