Toyota Is Developing a New-Generation Roomy: Everything We Know So Far

Toyota is preparing a new generation of the compact Roomy minivan, which will soon turn 10 years old. According to Japanese media reports, the model will retain its familiar, practical proportions but receive a redesigned front end, a higher-quality interior, and a next-generation e-SMART hybrid system.

The Toyota Roomy is sold as a compact minivan focused on practicality and efficient use of interior space. The vehicle is in high demand in Japan’s highly competitive compact segment.

The Roomy Could Become More Modern While Keeping Its Familiar Proportions

According to a rendering published by Japanese magazine Motor-Fan, the new Roomy will not completely change the model’s concept. The body will retain its practical proportions, while its angular shape and large windows will remain defining features.

The main changes are expected at the front. Slim LED headlights will stretch outward and be connected by horizontal decorative strips. A wider grille should give the minivan a more upscale appearance. The front and rear fenders will also be redesigned, while the body’s side lines will become more pronounced.

Changes are also expected inside. According to Japanese media reports, the vehicle will get a 10.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and other smartphone connectivity options. The instrument cluster could be offered with 7- and 12.3-inch displays. The overall interior architecture will also be revised, while the trim materials are expected to be upgraded.

The biggest technical change will be the new e-SMART hybrid system. Two electric motors will drive the vehicle and could produce a combined 106 horsepower. Maximum torque is rated at 171 Nm.

The 1.2-liter gasoline engine will serve as a generator rather than directly powering the wheels. This setup will separate the functions of the internal-combustion engine and electric motors.

Insiders also promise a significant improvement in the five-door model’s fuel economy. The next Toyota Roomy is expected to achieve more than 30 km/L. Converted to the U.S. system, that works out to more than 70 mpg.

Overall, the next Roomy is expected to retain the core concept of a compact, practical minivan while becoming more modern through its new exterior, updated interior, and next-generation e-SMART hybrid powertrain.
