The $5 Trick That Could Fix a Big Dent in Your Car at Home

A large dent with no paint damage can often be repaired at home with a simple tool you probably already have.

If you end up with a large dent in your car’s bodywork and the paint is still intact, you may be able to fix it yourself. The surprising part is that you don’t necessarily need specialized body-repair equipment to do it.

Take a dented door, for example. There are no chips, scratches or cracks in the paint—just a large dent that needs to be pulled back into shape.

A professional body shop could charge a significant amount for a repair like this. But if the damage is relatively straightforward, there’s a simple DIY method worth trying first.

How to Fix a Dent Yourself

Start by pouring hot water over the dent and the surrounding area. The heat helps make the metal and body panel more flexible, making the dent easier to work out. Pour the water slowly and carefully over the damaged area.

After a few seconds, grab a clean plunger and use it like a suction cup. Press it firmly against the panel and pull it toward you.

Don’t necessarily start in the exact center of the dent. It can be easier to work your way inward from the edges, gradually pulling the damaged panel back toward its original shape.

Continue working around the dent a little at a time. With some patience, the panel can gradually return to its original position.

When you’re finished, the defect may be barely noticeable, especially if the paint was never damaged.

It’s a simple trick worth keeping in mind if you ever find yourself dealing with a dented body panel. Just keep in mind that it’s best suited to dents where the paint is intact and the panel hasn’t been sharply creased or otherwise seriously damaged.
