One of a Kind: World's Rarest 1957 Maserati 200SI Fetches Seven Figures

Maserati produced the 200S race car between 1955 and 1959, building only 28 examples. One of these — a Sport Internazionale version made exclusively in 1957 — is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer. Despite featuring a non-original engine and a reworked body, bidding has already reached the $1 million mark, with three days still remaining in the auction.

The Maserati 200S was built on a Gilco-supplied chassis, while the bodywork — including that of the car now for sale — was crafted by Carrozzeria Fantuzzi. The “SI” designation indicates compliance with international racing standards, the main difference being a full-width windshield. In the model’s later years, the 200SI was succeeded by the 250S, which featured a larger engine.

This particular 200SI’s body was restored and repainted in its current bright red shade some time ago. In the 1960s, the chassis was fitted with a Chevrolet engine, which was later replaced by a European inline-four with an aluminum block, twin carburetors, and a dry-sump lubrication system — a larger unit than the original Maserati powerplant. The seller notes that the original engine will be included with the sale.

The car was originally built for Maserati’s U.S. distributor, but delivery was delayed, and the spider spent several years racing in Europe before eventually being shipped to America, where it continued competing. The rare roadster remained active in motorsport until the early 2000s, most recently appearing in historic rallies and classic racing events. The 200SI comes with FIA documentation and an official Maserati heritage certificate.

Another rare European sports car also surfaced for sale in mid-October — a Lancia Delta HF Integrale Edizione Finale listed in Japan, valued at over $100,000.
