AMG Preps 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Refresh: “Star” DRLs and New Grille Spotted in Photos

Mercedes-AMG is preparing a mild refresh for the GLE 53, which will be sold as a 2027 model and should arrive at dealerships around the usual model cycle. This sporty mid-size SUV is based on the fourth-generation GLE, which debuted in 2018, with the AMG 53 variant joining a year later. While the model already received a facelift in 2023, its age and the need to align with newer Mercedes designs are prompting AMG to roll out another round of updates for both the standard SUV and the coupe version. Spy shots of the 2027 GLE 53 have already surfaced during testing.

The most striking visual update comes in the lighting department. The refreshed GLE will feature daytime running lights shaped like Mercedes’ signature star. AMG and Mercedes have been gradually applying this design across their lineup—initially on rear lights, and now, with this facelift, both front and rear lights will adopt the motif.

Another notable change is a new grille. Even under the camouflage, the grille appears significantly larger than the current model and echoes the design language of the new electric GLC with EQ technology revealed in September. A key detail: the grille will have a prominent frame, something the current GLE lacks in both standard Mercedes and AMG trims. Bumpers are also expected to be tweaked, and wheel designs may be refreshed, but major body panels will remain unchanged—this is a facelift, not a full redesign.

Under the hood, the 3.0-liter inline-six MHEV engine will likely carry over, currently rated at 429 hp (435 PS). AMG engineers are expected to squeeze out a bit more power by the time the model debuts in 2026.

The urgency makes sense: BMW is expected to launch the new X5 G65 for the MY27 cycle, including a high-performance M60 variant. With BMW’s fresh Neue Klasse design, the aging GLE could look less competitive in comparison, making these AMG updates crucial.

It’s also worth noting that Mercedes’ design department is undergoing changes. Creative director Gordon Wagener has stepped down after nearly 30 years, but his signature influence will still be visible, including on this GLE 53 refresh.
