Mercedes-Benz GLC Becomes the First EV with a Certified “Vegan” Interior

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled an all-electric version of its popular GLC crossover, offering buyers the option of a fully “vegan” interior. According to the company, this marks the first time an automaker has introduced a certified interior of this kind.

Cabins included in the Vegan Package contain no materials of animal origin and involve no animal testing. That claim has been independently verified by The Vegan Society following an in-depth audit of Mercedes-Benz’s supply chain that lasted more than two years. During the process, the organization reviewed over 100 individual components from multiple suppliers, checking both material composition and testing methods.

As part of the audit, soft-touch materials such as synthetic leather, textiles, carpets, and headliners were closely examined. Any components that previously relied on animal-derived ingredients were redesigned using alternative materials. Mercedes-Benz also assessed and minimized the risk of cross-contamination from animal-based substances. In addition, the new interiors make extensive use of recycled materials.

The electric Mercedes-Benz GLC is powered by a drivetrain producing 483 horsepower, with a top speed electronically limited to about 130 mph. A 94-kWh battery provides an estimated driving range of up to 443 miles. Thanks to DC fast charging at up to 330 kW, the GLC can add roughly 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The vehicle is built around an 800-volt electrical architecture.

The model runs on Mercedes-Benz’s new MB.OS software platform with built-in artificial intelligence and features the fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system, integrating AI technologies from Microsoft and Google. Buyers can also opt for the massive 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, currently the largest display offered in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

Driver assistance comes in the form of an SAE Level 2 system with navigation support, allowing the vehicle to guide itself from a parking spot to its destination. As with all Level 2 systems, the driver must remain attentive and ready to take control at any time.

The electric Mercedes-Benz GLC is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of 2026. The vegan interior option will be available through the brand’s online configurator.
