AI-generated images inspired Caterpillar to create its own pickup, blending heavy equipment styling with a Ford Super Duty base.

Caterpillar Builds a Pickup Inspired by AI-Generated Designs

AI-generated images sparked Caterpillar to create its own pickup based on a Ford Super Duty, though the Cat Truck currently exists as a one-off prototype.

In the world of construction and mining equipment, Caterpillar is a true giant. The name is synonymous with massive machines and earthmoving equipment, not everyday vehicles. Yet with its extensive engineering expertise, it was only a matter of time before CAT explored building something for consumer use.

In a sense, that’s exactly what happened. The project originated in late 2024, when AI-generated images of a CAT-branded pickup started circulating online and quickly gained popularity. Caterpillar later admitted that the concept captured their imagination so much that they decided to build a real truck. The catch: it’s based on an existing Ford chassis, not an all-new platform. For now, the company confirms this is purely a single experimental vehicle, meaning the chances of seeing it on the market are extremely slim.

Despite using a predictable donor, Caterpillar managed to give the truck a unique look that aligns with its brand style. Only the Super Duty headlights remain from the original Ford. CAT developed a new grille and bumper with dark accents and bright yellow tow hooks.

The hood was replaced with a more aggressive design, and the wheel arches were squared off. Additional upgrades include new side steps and custom wheels with off-road tires. The truck wears the signature yellow-and-black color scheme reminiscent of the company’s heavy machinery. Even a roof-mounted drone can be deployed directly from the cab — a feature already appearing on some Chinese pickups.

Little is known about the interior beyond the inclusion of CAT’s VisionLink Productivity infotainment system with an AI assistant designed to simplify work on busy construction sites.

There’s no doubt Caterpillar has the engineering know-how to create its own pickup. Turning that expertise into a production-ready vehicle that could compete with established trucks, however, would be a much bigger challenge. For now, the company is content with its one-off Cat Truck, and there are no indications that more will follow.
