This Restored 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Blends Classic Luxury With Performance That Could Surprise Modern Sports Cars

Some cars simply pass through the years unnoticed. Others leave a lasting impression. The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE clearly belongs to the second group. After an extensive restoration, the classic luxury sedan has regained its former glory and now looks even sharper than when it first left the factory almost six decades ago. The project was carried out with obsessive attention to detail and virtually no compromises.

Automotive designer Daniel Valjevac from Retro Design led the transformation of the now 57-year-old sedan. The car was completely reimagined from the ground up while still preserving the timeless character and classic styling that made the model famous. After thousands of hours of work at the company’s shop in Harrisburg, the finished product stands as one of the most performance-focused 280 SE builds ever created.

The exterior wears a deep Axalta ChromaxXP Irish Green finish. The build features a shaved sunroof and modern LED lighting, while the wheels take inspiration from the original factory design with a modern twist. The sedan rides on custom billet wheels made by Evod Industries, complete with floating hubcaps and center logos that remain upright even while the wheels are spinning.

All of the chrome trim was refinished by Advanced Plating and gleams much like it did when the car first rolled off the assembly line in Sindelfingen back in 1969. Specialists carefully reworked nearly every inch of the body and mechanical components during the build.

Under the hood sits a modern 5.4-liter M113 V8 sourced from Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG. The engine reportedly produces roughly four times the power of the original 2.8-liter inline-six that once powered the sedan. Do the math and that puts the output somewhere around 640 horsepower.

Power is sent through a five-speed automatic 5G-Tronic gearbox. The overhaul also included a custom wiring harness and a sealed motorsport-grade electrical system developed by ModernRacing, along with aftermarket ECU integration and transmission management software created by SoundGerman Automotive.

The fuel system uses stainless steel lines and a custom tank built by Rick's Tanks, while an aluminum radiator from Ron Davis Radiators handles cooling duties. Meanwhile, the V8 announces its presence through a stainless steel custom exhaust built by Kooks Headers & Exhaust.

Beneath the car sits a completely reworked suspension setup along with a modern braking system designed to handle the extra power. The brakes include an electronic brake booster and an E‑Stopp electronic parking brake.

Inside, the team at Retro Design redesigned the cabin with a fully bespoke approach. Hand-crafted details appear throughout the interor. Custom door panels feature subtle accent lighting, and the fully restored seats come with unique stitching and built-in heating.

One-off digital gauges from Dakota Digital provide modern driving data. A premium audio system with an Audison amplifier and Focal speakers handles the music. Climate comfort comes from a modern air-conditioning system by Vintage Air, carefully integrated while keeping the original factory controls intact.

Elegant, powerful, and unmistakably classic, this 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE could easily intimidate plenty of modern sports cars on today’s roads—while doing it with unmistakable late-1960s charm and style.
