This Bamboo-Filled Camper Van Packs a Massive Garage and Serious Off-Grid Capability

Summit Vans blends luxury, practicality, and adventure-ready features into one impressive off-grid camper.

This Bamboo-Filled Camper Van Packs a Massive Garage and Serious Off-Grid Capability

The latest camper conversion from Summit Vans is called the Bamboo Basecamp, and the name tells you a lot about what makes this build stand out. Based on a 2025 all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a 170-inch wheelbase, this Australian-built rig combines upscale living with the rugged hardware needed for extended adventures far from civilization.

Summit Vans offers several floor plans, but the Bamboo Basecamp uses the company's Summit L2 layout, a configuration designed to strike a balance between off-road capability and everyday comfort.

A quick glance at the exterior reveals that this van was built for more than campground duty. It rides on factory Sprinter wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires and benefits from a Gross Vehicle Mass upgrade that boosts payload capacity from 9,038 pounds to 9,766 pounds. The upgrade includes a heavy-duty rear leaf spring and reinforced rear shock mounts.

The company didn't stop there. A Van Compass Stage 2.3 suspension package with adjustable Falcon shocks at both ends helps improve ride quality and capability on rough terrain.

At the rear, a Weldbeat spare tire carrier doubles as a ladder, providing access to a roof rack loaded with adventure gear. Up top you'll find a 13-foot Fiamma awning, a forward-facing LED light bar, four 200-watt solar panels, a Maxxair roof vent, a Starlink Mini antenna, and a Dometic air-conditioning unit.

Like many premium Sprinter conversions, the Bamboo Basecamp features rear body flares. These extensions widen the sleeping area enough to allow a crosswise bed layout, making much better use of interior space. Summit's Overland flares also incorporate side windows for extra natural light.

Additional upgrades include a Roambuilt front bumper with heavy-duty recovery points, utility hookups, a Mission 4x4 folding table, and Weldbeat side steps. For added durability, the bumper, rocker panels, and flares are coated with protective truck bed liner.

Getting inside couldn't be much easier. Along with the side steps, the sliding door is power-operated, opening automatically after a simple pull on the handle.

As the name suggests, bamboo dominates the interior. The cabin features bamboo cabinetry, a bamboo slatted ceiling with integrated LED lighting, woven beige flooring, and walls trimmed in gray Warwick outdoor fabric.

Black hardware and bright white solid-surface countertops add contrast to the natural wood tones. The open-concept design keeps the driver and living areas connected without a divider wall, helping the space feel larger than it already is.

Directly across from the entrance is the bathroom. Hidden behind a tall mirrored door, it includes a shower with a handheld sprayer and a Clesana heat-sealing toilet. L-Tracks mounted on the walls provide convenient places to hang wet gear, while a dedicated air vent allows the room to function as a drying area after a day outdoors.

The kitchen is equally well thought out. It includes a deep stainless-steel sink, a portable induction cooktop, a flip-up work surface, and a slide-out coffee station. Storage comes courtesy of overhead cabinets, drawers, and lower cabinetry.

Across the aisle sits a floor-to-ceiling storage unit incorporating a 46-gallon Thetford refrigerator with a compact freezer section and a microwave. Additional drawers, cabinets, and a tall wardrobe provide plent of room for extended trips.

The bedroom occupies the rear of the van. Amenities include a swivel-mounted television, overhead shelving, upper cabinets, and a Sirocco fan. Additional L-Tracks allow owners to customize the space as needed.

One of the most impressive aspects of the Bamboo Basecamp is its oversized garage. A heavy-duty slide-out tray can accommodate two full-size electric bicycles, while access is available from both inside and outside the vehicle.

Creating that much storage space required raising the bed significantly higher than usual, meaning occupants use a small ladder to climb into bed.

Utility systems are housed in storage compartments along both sides of the garage. The electrical setup includes an impressive 820-amp-hour battery bank paired with a 3,000-watt inverter charger. Charging options include solar panels, shore power, and DC-to-DC charging while driving.

The plumbing system features a 24-gallon freshwater tank, a 12-gallon gray-water tank, and an outdoor shower. Heating and hot water are supplied by a diesel-powered Dieselheat DH9 hydronic system.

Overall, the Bamboo Basecamp is an extreemly versatile adventure vehicle capable of supporting long off-grid journeys or even full-time van life. It blends premium comfort with genuine capability in a package that feels carefully thought out from front to back.

Luxury like this doesn't come cheap. The Summit L2 package starts at approximately $160,000, including the van itself. Given the equipment list and the fact that it's built on a brand-new AWD Sprinter 170—one of the most expensive camper van platforms available—the price feels surprisingly resonable, especially when compared with some North American builds that can easily push well beyond $200,000.
