Big and Affordable: Hyundai Neira Three-Row Crossover Revealed in Person

The Hyundai Neira concept made its public debut at the Indonesia International Auto Show. The model features a three-row, seven-seat interior and is powered exclusively by electric motors.

Hyundai released very little information about the new Neira. The company only confirmed that production of the crossover will begin at its manufacturing plant in Indonesia. Whether the new model will be sold in other markets remains unknown. However, Indian media report that the Neira is likely based on the same platform as the Kia Carens Clavis.

Several details support that assumption. First, both crossovers share a similar body layout, combining compact dimensions with three rows of seating. The straight roofline and the size of the side windows also reinforce the resemblance. At the same time, Hyundai styled the Neira after its gasoline-powered crossovers, such as the Creta. The Korean model features triangular headlights connected by a curved LED light strip stretching across the front above the grille. The front bumper is accented by a large silver trim piece. At the rear, vertically oriented taillights are also connected by an LED light bar.

Interior details for the new Neira have not yet been revealed. However, if the crossover is indeed based on the Carens Clavis platform, and considering that Hyundai and Kia typically share components in similar vehicles, the new model should come with a standard 135-horsepower electric motor producing up to 188 lb-ft of torque. That version is expected to use a battery providing about 249 miles of driving range. An optional 171-horsepower electric motor may also be offered. In the top trim, the Neira's range is expected to increase to nearly 304 miles.

If the assumption about its relationship to the Carens Clavis proves correct, Hyundai's new crossover should be an affordable model. The Kia currently sells in India for the equivalent of about $20,000.

The production Neira could also receive the large touchscreen for Hyundai's Pleos infotainment system, which the automaker has already begun rolling out across its lineup. The updated Creta will be among the next models to receive it. In addition, the Neira is expected to offer a digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, single-zone climate control, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic roof, a Bose premium audio system, lane-keeping assist, and other features.

The production version of the Neira will most likely differ slightly from the concept shown. However, Hyundai is unlikely to make major changes to the crossover's design.
