GM Faces Investigation Into Nearly 1 Million Vehicles Over Engine Problems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a new investigation into 997,743 General Motors vehicles following reports of engine failures. The probe covers 2021–2026 model-year vehicles equipped with L87 engines.
The vehicles include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL. NHTSA has received 499 reports of engine failures in vehicles that had already undergone repairs as part of a previous recall.
GM previously recalled about 600,000 vehicles because of the risk of failure involving the 6.2-liter L87 engine. The company attributed the problem to manufacturing and quality-control issues at a supplier.
The regulator will now assess the effectiveness of the repairs that were performed and determine what caused the latest engine failures. The expanded investigation also covers engines manufactured outside the period originally identified, as NHTSA has received reports of failures involving those engines as well.
