Kia has announced an expansion of the Carens family – an electric version will soon join the petrol and diesel models.

Kia Carens Clavis Crossover: a version with completely different 'stuffing' is on the way

Kia is preparing for a new stage in the development of the Carens model: a fully electric variant will soon be added to the petrol and diesel versions. Official information is still scarce, but according to rumors, the electric version will borrow its technical base from the Hyundai Creta Electric.

The appearance of the Carens Clavis compact van took place in May this year in the Indian market. Although Kia positions it as a separate model, in essence, it is an updated Carens. Recall that the original version debuted in 2021 and is still on sale. Kia speaks of a symbiosis between a minivan and a crossover - Clavis, like the standard Carens, lies at the intersection of these two classes. The entire lineup, including Carens and Clavis, is considered to be akin to the Kia Seltos crossover. Currently, the model is offered with petrol engines - a naturally aspirated 1.5 with a power of 115 hp and a turbocharged 1.5 T-GDI with an output of 160 hp, as well as a diesel 1.5 CRDi (116 hp). The electric version Carens Clavis EV has already been confirmed and presented in a teaser.

The appearance of the electric version differs from the ICE models primarily in the design of the front end. A blank panel replaced the radiator grille, with a charging port integrated into it. Below, there is a decorative insert matching the body color, and fog lights have been added to the bumper. The unique design of the wheels, typical for electric vehicles, deserves special attention.

The interior has also undergone changes. Instead of the conventional center tunnel, there's a 'floating' console that visually lightens the interior. The instrument panel is integrated into a single screen, as in the ICE versions after restyling. The teaser shows a seven-seat modification, but like the traditional Carens, a six-seat option is possible.

The technical specifications are still under wraps, however, Kia revealed an estimated range - up to 490 kilometers. It appears this figure is based on local certification data. Indian automotive publications suggest that the Carens Clavis EV is based on the platform of the Hyundai Creta Electric. The latter has two versions: a base one with a 135 hp electric motor and a 42 kWh battery, plus a more expensive variant with a 171 hp engine and a 51.4 kWh battery.

The official premiere of the Carens Clavis EV is scheduled for July 15. The electric car, like models with traditional powertrains, will be produced at Kia's Indian plant.
